In the Limelight'- 2nd Quarter Roundup

The end of another successful quarter for RC UOC FMF! After finishing a successful 1st quarter we were able to carry on the same momentum to the 2nd quarter where the results achieved were magnanimous. We were able to successfully complete a staggering 20 projects within these two quarters. “In the Limelight” the quarterly roundup gives you an insight of the activities and achievements of the club during the 2nd quarter. 

President Rtr. Praveen Fernando expressed these views with regards to the club's performance during the 1st half of the year- 
"As the theme of RCUOCFMF for 2015/16 remarks on working together with new dreams, this great initiative has brought new dreams into the opportunities the club has set across this year.

During the tenure we have successfully completed more than 20 quality projects with the active participation of all our members. The key success factor is giving the opportunity for all members to be in committees and appointing a mix of chairpersons giving much encouragement to everyone to serve better. 

We as a club believe every step the club embarks on sets our individual lives reach better heights to journey upon in developing the club members’ personality as a Proud Rotaractor. 

Next quarter is even more exciting, especially with 2 mega projects planned out ahead. Execution of all the projects is made easy through effective delegation of authority to all members which has boosted all members enthusiasm towards the development of the club. 

I wish to convey that let's dream big and we as RCUOCFMF will give our fullest contribution in reaching our objective of building up good relationships through fellowship and togetherness with the entire Rotary movement."

Awards & Recognitions

President and Rotaractors of the Month

3 out of the 4 months of the past quarter were conquered by the members of RCUOCFMF! President of our club Rtr. Praveen Fernando was selected as the President of the Month for October, by the Rotaract District 3220. In addition to this Rtr. Praveen was also nominated for the same award for the month of August as well as for September. This is a very deserving award for our President for his unprecedented hard work and commitment towards Rotaract and towards driving the club to new standards. 

The Rotaract District 3220 awarded our Director of Professional Development Rtr. Dinath Federico the Rotaractor of the Month for September, where this is the 2nd consecutive time an FMFer is getting the award after our Editor Rtr. Ruzni Faik won the same for the month of August. Rtr. Dinath has been successful in pulling off many PD projects within a short time such as the Workshop on Workplace Psychology, SL2College Voices 2015 and the magnum opus ‘Glass Ice’, which stands as one of the best PD projects ever in the entire District. 

FMF also won its 3rd Rotarator of the Month title in the year when Rtr. Ruvini Nuwangi was awarded the Rotaractor of the Month for November. Rtr. Ruvini is arguably the most hardworking and dedicated member of the club where she has been actively involved in almost all projects of the club with 100% commitment. She also chaired the project 'Rotaract for Cataract' which was an immense success.

Community Service

“Hasareli”
The 2nd quarter was kicked off with project “Hasareli”, which is the Children’s Day project of the club. It was held on the 2nd of October at the Mother Theresa's Home in Moratuwa. With the participation of about 25 members of the club, we were able to collect some necessary items for the children and donate them. The project was named “Hasareli” since we focused on the happiness and enjoyment of the kids. This project was chaired by our Vice President Rtr. Shalini Wijewardana along with Rtr. Baghya Erathna, Rtr. Isuri Weeraman, Rtr. Sapuni Senarathne and Rtr. Don Shehan Salinda.

Battle of the Greens – “Sand-tastic”

Battle of the Greens was a joint project which was initiated by our club along with the Interact club of St. Peter’s College. Battle of the Greens was implemented as an environmental campaign which focused on conserving the environment and creating awareness about the green concept.  

The first stage of the project was to join hands with the Clean Up the World Foundation, which is in conjunction with the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP).  As the second phase of the project we conducted a series of competitions in line with Clean Up the World Foundation. 

The Final phase of the project was a beach clean-up which included the awards ceremony for the winners of the Battle of the Greens. This took place on the 17th of October from 3.00 p.m. onwards at the Mt. Lavinia beach with the project name SAND-TASTIC 2015. This was a project which was chaired by our Co-Community Service Director Rtr. Hiruni Perera, Vice President Rtr. Shalini Wijewardana, Green life Directors Rtr. Chathura Kularathne and Rtr. Kasun Mullegamgoda.

Rotaract for Cataract

“Rotaract for Cataract” was a cataract surgery project organized jointly by our club along with the Rotaract Clubs of Cinnamon Gardens and National School of Business Management (NSBM).  This was organized as the phase five of Project Serve, which is an official Rotaract District project done to mark the Poya days in each month of the year. The project which initially intended to conduct 50 surgeries ended up funding over 120 cataract surgeries, thanks to the generous contribution of our donors. This project was chaired by Rtr. Ruvini Nuwangi and Rtr. Isuri Weeraman.

Clothing Drive

Clothing Drive is a project which focused on collecting clothes and other items, such as toys, which are new or fairly new which will be distributed during this holiday season among the less privileged so that we will be able help them and bring a smile to their faces. The project commenced on the 27th of November and we were able to collect many items on the very first day from our very own batch mates and friends. These items were distributed to a home, at the end of this month. This project was chaired by Rtr. Ranisha Fernando.

Make a Wish

‘Make a Wish’ is the official Christmas project organized by our club which was successfully completed on the 27th of November. Our main objective was to give an opportunity for the less privileged children to experience the joys of Christmas while also emphasizing the importance of education and learning. Thus a group of 25 A/L students of the ‘Katuwana Pelana Central College, Hatharaliyadda’ were brought down to Colombo to participate in the project.  The project was chaired by Rtr. Ruvini Perera and Rtr. Ranithri Samarawickrama.

“Make a Wish”
“Make a Wish”, our official Christmas Project for the year 2015 was held on the 27th of November with the main objective of giving an opportunity to the less privileged children to experience the joy of Christmas. This time the project was carried out in a different manner to emphasize he significance of education and learning to the Advanced Level students of the Katuwana Pelana Central College, Hatharaliyadda and to motivate them to achieve their future goals and dreams. As such, we brought down these students who have never visited Colombo and took them on a tour around our University and to a few other places of interest around Colombo giving them a fun day out spreading the true spirit of Christmas. Take a glimpse of how these kids had an amazing experience! :)

Professional Development

Glass Ice
"Glass Ice" was the ultimate career and personality development workshop hosted by the club together with the Leo Club of Negombo Host 306 B1. The project was held on the 9th of October at the Trace – Expert City, Maradana. The main purpose of this project was to promote professionalism and leadership development among the youth. 

This project saw the participation of the World Champion of Public Speaking Mr. Dananjaya Hettiarachchi, along with Mr. Dulith Herath, Founder and CEO of Kapruka, Mr. Kishu Gomes, CEO/Managing Director of Chevron Lubricants Lanka Plc, and Ms. Selyna Peiris, Attorney-at-Law & Consultant (Social Business/ Livelihood Development) and entrepreneur of Selyn Exports (Pvt) Ltd

The project was chaired by our Professional Development Director Rtr. Dinath Federico and Vice President Rtr. Ruvindi De Silva. Glass Ice was a mammoth success that it is recognized as one of the best Professional Development projects organized.

Circle 2015
CIRCLE 2015 was a Cluster project organized by our club in collaboration with Rotaract Club of Excellence College of Management, Rotaract Club of Colombo Regency, Rotaract Club of Singer Sri Lanka, Rotaract Club of Negombo, Rotaract Club of Colombo Mid Town and Rotaract Club of Chunnakam (Rotaract Cluster 7 of Rotaract District 3220). The workshop was held on the 6th of December 2015 at the Singer Sri Lanka auditorium. 
This interactive workshop covered many interesting topics such as

• Wealth Management and Personal Finance
• The magic behind photography and creation of short videos
• Start-ups

Club Service

Club T-shirt
During the quarter our club unveiled its new t-shirt designed based on our club’s new logo and the theme of the year. The designing and printing of the t-shirts were done by “Creatia Promotions” of our former club member Rtr. Nipun Alwis. The Project was chaired by our Finance Director Rtr. Thilini Leeniyagolla.

First Year Orientation
The orientation for the new comers of the 1st year batch was held on the 13th of November 2015. The purpose of this program was to introduce the club to the first years and to get them to join us in supporting and strengthening the club. We were able to showcase the immense success the club was able to achieve in such a short span of time as well as an insight into what Rotaract is and how it can help change our lives as well as the lives of those around us.
During the orientation the club also celebrated its birthday where a cake was cut to mark the anniversary of chartering the club.

Blog and Social Media

The club blog reached many milestones during the quarter, where the club published its 50th Blog post in just 94 days since launch and currently has 66 blog posts published. In addition to this the club crossed 7,500 views and has now become one of the most viewed blogs in the District. We are able to maintain the FMF Blog as one of the best blogs thanks to the unprecedented support and enthusiasm of our members in writing blog articles.

The club’s social media pages continues to be active and has one of the widest coverage in all social media pages, namely, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Google+ and the Blog.

During the quarter the club launched its Instagram page and since then has become a key tool in promoting the club events as well as to build fellowship among not only the clubs in the District but also clubs from other parts of the world. 

The club’s official Facebook page also crossed 2000 likes while the club has also used the Twitter page consistently since its launch last year.

The social media pages have been kept live and has been well managed thanks to our PR Director Rtr. Kalana Madusanka and Editor Rtr. Ruzni Faik.

Outlook for rest of the year 

Moving into the second half of the year our club is focused on carrying forward the momentum but with more focus on each project in order to obtain success in terms of quality. 

The club will continue “Future for Us” this year as well with focus on more schools this time around. Further Happy Street Pooch, one of our successful Community Service and PR project last year, will also be carried out this year.

The award winning iGenius organized in partnership with the Rotaract Club of Colombo Mid-Town will also be happening during the second half of the year. Few other projects the club plans to carry out in the upcoming quarter are Car Wash, S.L.A.M, Secret Valentine and Speak Out.

Based on these highlights it can be witnessed that the club has built on its strengths and has raised the bar since quarter 1. It is thus safe to assume that the club will continue its momentum into the 3rd quarter and will try to realize the 'Dream' it set to achieve.
