Baila Night 2015

“Parasindu Kolompure modara gan iwuru kone viole naade asenne
Hariyata watila pore pennala dun baila sare baila raja ganai kiyanne
Lankawata baila gena Wolly Bastian
Baila walin rata hollapu baila Champion……….!”

An evening full of Baila music and dancing started with this classic Sri Lankan Baila song, attracting the crowd to the dancing floor.
“Baila Night 2015” organized by the Rotaract Club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Arts in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Cinnamon Gardens was held on the 21st of November at the Havelock City Clubhouse from  7pm onwards under the tag ‘It’s a Sarong Party’.

This was organized for the fourth consecutive time with an aim to raise funds to provide educational and sporting equipment for Talpadu Punithavalaar Roman Catholic School in Mannar in which students have won many all island hockey tournaments despite the lack of facilities. At the same time it was a night of local entertainment for friends in Rotaract giving an opportunity to strengthen the fellowship.

Around 20 members of our club participated in Baila Night 2015 which was a great experience adorned with Baila music, dance, food and rewarding entertainment.

Sri Lankan Baila music was one of the alluring factors which kept individuals on the dancing floor throughout the event. There were balloon dancing competitions as well as paper dancing competitions. Kottu with drinks was the official menu of the night which the guests enjoyed a lot as it went along with the dancing.

The dancing challenge was a motivator for all the dancers and one would call it the most intensified moment of the event. This dancing battle went to an ultimate level giving the win to the two best performers. Pasindu Tharanga was crowned as the ‘Baila King’ whilst Parami Fernando was the ‘Baila Queen’ after their amazing performances.

Behind the “Baila Night” the endeavour of the Rotaract Club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Arts and the Rotaract Club of Cinnamon Gardens to support the educational and sporting requirements for school children should be appreciated. “Baila Night” is an event that has been happening for the past three years and previously it was organized to support the Kalaabogaswewa Vidyalaya in Vavuniya. We as fellow Rotaractors highly appreciate the efforts of the organizing committee for successfully pulling off the concept of Baila Night yet again and for the good cause behind it.
